Carol is an absolute animal lover as she would choose to live in a zoo rather than a theme park. She is a pawrent to a 10 year old Jack Russell dog and you will most likely find her chilling in Thailand and exploring the extensive night markets.
Tell us more about your background.
I have taught a wide range of students from pre-nursery all the way to secondary level. I previously worked as a kindergarten teacher for 4 years and to widen my knowledge and teaching skills, I worked as a Teaching Assistant in a special education school.
Working with primary and secondary aged children with special needs requires patience, empathy, strong communication skills, and a willingness to collaborate with other professionals. This experience has opened my eyes to understanding disabilities and their impact on learning and development. I have seen the different moods and witnessed violent tendencies in children, which takes time and effort to recognise that each child is unique, and support their needs as individuals.

How do you engage with special needs children?
Most of the time, special needs children are willing to listen and learn. I focus on the child’s strengths and celebrate their accomplishments, no matter how small. It is very important to know their likes and dislikes as I want to mitigate triggering them.

What’s the one thing you learned from students that you didn’t know?
I’m forever learning from my students. This is the joy that I get from teaching 1:1.
All the interactions I have with my students encourages me to think how I can teach more effectively and by promoting a positive learning environment, I have fun as well as the students.

Why choose freelancing?
Most people think it’s for flexibility and autonomy, however freelancing offers me a sense of purpose and fulfillment in helping my students achieve their goals and I can see the direct impact of my lessons on my students’ learning and development. I can also focus on my areas of expertise, allowing me to deepen my knowledge and skills.

Which aspects do you like about freelancing at iSpeech?
I enjoy the student conferences, where we can learn and share our teaching experiences and how to take measures in a certain situation. I’ve taken away some advice from other teachers and applied to my own lessons which has been incredibly helpful. The team genuinely love to hear from all the teachers and care about our wellness too. The student conferences are also a way to connect with other freelancers and have conversations other than teaching which is very refreshing.
I think that the Yuppies curriculum is well thought out and I particularly enjoy teaching the Story Narration course because the illustrations are adorable. I appreciate the guidance and feel valued as a member of the team.
Congrats on earning the iStar Award. How do you feel about being recognised for your efforts?
It has reminded me of the initial passion that drew me to the profession, the joy of seeing students grow and my love of learning. I didn’t think that I would get recognised as a freelancer, but it is definitely a driving force to continue teaching.
